2012 RULES CHANGES FOR RIVERHEAD RACEWAY ANNOUNCED, HAULER/TRAILER REGISTRATION FORMS NOW AVAILABLE

After a recent meeting among the key NASCAR Whelen All-American Series officials of Riverhead Raceway some rules changes for 2012 have been announced as the track prepares for its 63rd season of stock car racing. Opening weekend is set for Saturday evening May 5th and Sunday afternoon May 6th at the historic quarter mile facility.

All race teams that will compete this Spring and Summer at Riverhead should first download the 2012 Hauler/Trailer response form so track officials can pre-plan parking for the 2012 campaign. Also while filling out that form, please include your race team's radio frequency for those divisions who are permitted two-way radios. If your team competes in a class that is permitted radios, but you don't have them, please make a note of that fact. To download the form go to www.riverheadraceway.com and it's on the home page.

NASCAR Modified teams should note that Walter Bonczyk has noted that as of now carburetors will be gauged with the existing gauges. An announcement from NASCAR could be forthcoming regarding carburetor booster, and Riverhead Raceway officials will make this information available when they have it.

Late Model teams are advised that under Brake System, only single or dual GM mount style calipers are permitted, while Blunderbust teams should note that ALL upper control arms must be equidistant!

Legend Race Cars for 2012 - it is now mandatory that all cars must have a master electrical disconnect switch or a fuel pump cut-off switch that needs to be clearly marked and mounted to the right side of the dashboard for easy access for emergency track workers.

For the 4/6-Cylinder and 8-Cylinder Enduro classes - mandatory for 2012 a 5-point racing harness with the shoulder harness mounted to a cross-bar are now required, belts must be securely mounted. It's suggested that Enduro teams contact NASCAR officials about the availability of used harnesses. All Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI) cars must install an electric fuel pump cut-off switch. No Limited Edition or Specialty Cars are permitted. Final decision regarding eligibility will be determined by track officials.

STAR SPEEDWAY AT RACER'S EXPO THIS WEEKEND

EPPING, NH- The rejuvinated Star Speedway will have a display this weekend at the "Racers Expo" in Marlborough, Mass., allowing race teams the opportunity to speak with representatives about the upcoming season. Team registrations for the 2012 season are well ahead of last year's pace, as is the support from businesses looking to be a part of an exciting season that lies ahead at the Epping oval.

"I think that the racers responded last year to Star opening and I'm guessing that the fans will respond this year," stated Ted Broadhurst, owner of EKeys 4 Cars, the title sponsor of the headlining Modified division. "The Modifieds were a solid division last season, but I think it's only going to get better this year. The word has gotten out."

In fact, the EKeys 4 Cars Modifieds already have more than 20 race teams pledging their support to Star Speedway for the 2012 race season, with more expected by opening day in May. Head Tech Inspector Pete Frappier admits that the calls from prospective race teams inquiring about the EKeys Modifieds have been numerous.

Registration forms for all divisions will be available at the Expo, along with membership forms, SBM 125 lap sponsor sheets, and the 2012 season schedule. Star Speedway will also be a part of the "Racin' Preview 2012" in Portland, Maine on February 24-25, with at least five race cars on display there.

Allen's Coffee Brandy has signed on to sponsor what will be called the "Allen's Outlaw Late Models". Woody's Auto Repair, headed by ISMA Supermodified driver Russ Wood has signed on as sponsor of the Strickly Stock class, which will replace the Rookie Stocks at Star in 2012. Both of these classes have had a very encouraging list of early entries. The entry level Roadrunners will be a part of the weekly action as well.

American Racer Tires, SPAFCO Chassis and Sunoco Race Fuels have each added their names to the EKeys Modified sponsor list. American Racer and Sunoco will also contribute point fund money to the other weekly divisions for every tire and gallon of gas sold during the season.

Other signed sponsorships for the 2012 race season include: TJCO, with Hard Charger Awards, Danger Designs with Best Appearing Awards, Kayem Hot Dogs, Coca-Cola and New England Motor Racing Supply.

BETHEL MOTOR SPEEDWAY SEEKING APPLICATIONS FOR MS. LEGENDSTOCK 2012

BETHEL, NY – For Legends and Bandolero racers, the excitement begins to build early for LegendStock, an INEX Legends Asphalt Nationals qualifier held on the quarter-mile oval at Bethel Motor Speedway. This year, that excitement is expected to spill over into the grandstands as the speedway office has invited interested parties to enter themselves into the running to serve as “Ms. LegendStock 2012”.

It is quite an honor to be named Ms. LegendStock, as the title brings with it the task of handing out the prestigious three-foot tall guitar-shaped trophies that have become a trademark of the event. In recent years, Cindy Bott (also Ms. NEETS), Sportsman driver Kimberlee Morgan (also Ms. Rockland County Motorsports 2011), and Amber McGibbon (former Little Miss Kauneonga Speedway) have all shared in the spotlight by assisting in the presentation of the highly sought-after trophies that are awarded to the division winners in the Legends class, as well as the overall Bandolero race winner.

This year’s LegendStock event is slated for Saturday, August 4^th, and interest in the event is already high, in spite of the fact that it is still six months away. Last year’s event drew in a record number of competitors from down South, as the event’s reach continues to grow.

The winner will be announced at Bethel Motor Speedway’s 2012 Opening Night.

Thompson Honors 2011 Champions

Thompson, CT: On Friday and Saturday, January 27 & 28, 2012, Thompson International Speedway crowned champions in its six NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions. Keith Rocco of Wallingford, CT, took center stage on Saturday night as the Sunoco Modified champion. Late Model titlist Tommy O’Sullivan of Springfield, MA, and Keith “Cam” McDermott of Scituate, RI, also received accolades. On Friday night, Larry Gelinas of Buxton, ME, shined as the Super Late Model champion. Sharing the spotlight were Chris “Moose” Douton of Waterford, CT, for his Limited Sportsman title and Danny Field of Deep River, CT, for his Mini Stock championship.

In looking back on the 2011 season, despite significant weather problems, the Thompson Speedway faithful were treated to some truly exceptional racing. Week-after-week, the level of excitement was equal only to that of the level of competition. Championships in four of the six divisions were not determined until the very last Thursday night race event; some came down to the final laps.

The competition at Thompson Speedway is unparalleled; proving once again that a championship at the historic facility is a tremendous accomplishment.

Keith Rocco of Wallingford, CT, has become synonymous with winning at Thompson. The Sunoco Modified 2011 title was his second championship in three years at the Speedway (and third overall). The title was a hard-fought one for Rocco and company. Many nights the battle for victory came down to the final turn of the final lap. Intense competition from the likes of runner-up Ryan Preece, Woody Pitkat, Danny Cates, Rick Fuller, and Todd Ceravolo brought fans to their feet time and time again.

“Whether there are 10 cars or 30 cars, on the last lap the fans are always on their feet,” said the champion from the podium at the Raceway Golf Club, “because you never know what is going to happen. That is why I love racing here at Thompson.”

In sixteen races Rocco secured 15 top-five finishes including six victories. Despite the impressive numbers, the championship came down to the final point race. Mechanical woes on Rocco’s #57 early in the race made for some drama. In the end, Rocco earned his car owners Mark and Mike Payne and the M&M Stone Creations team the title by six points over Preece.

For his efforts, Rocco received a bronze eagle trophy from Thompson Speedway. He also received hardware from NASCAR and a champion’s jacket from Hoosier Racing Tires to commemorate his achievement.

Young gun Ryan Preece of Berlin, CT, took over the Falmouth Ready Mix #31 for owners Al & Cathy Moniz at the start of the 2011 season. It became evident early in the season that the new combination would be a force to be reckoned with; giving Rocco and others a run for the money. At season’s end, Preece had earned 15 top-five finishes in 16 starts including three wins. Danny Cates, of Chaplin, CT, continued to develop as an open-wheel driver posting 14 top-ten and 11 top-five finishes with one victory to finish third in the final point standings. Carl Oberg Sutton, MA, rode consistency to fourth place in the final point standings. He was also recognized as the divisions “Most Improved Driver”.

Former divisional champion, Woody Pitkat of Stafford, CT, had an eventful season taking over the potent ride for owner Jimmy Paige on June 16, 2011. After debuting with a victory, Pitkat went on to score 12 top-ten finishes, 11 top-five finishes and three additional wins; finishing fifth in the final point standings. George Wilkinson of Pawcatuck,CT, who finished eighth in the final point standings, earned Rookie-Of-The-Year honors.

Always a strong competitor Tommy O’Sullivan of Springfield, MA, turned in one great performance after another on Thursday nights in 2011 to earn the title of Late Model Champion. In fourteen races, the T&E Motorsports Team recorded 13 top-five finishes. A handful of victories proved to be insurmountable as O’Sullivan cruised to the championship.

“This championship gives my parents seven total as car owners,” said O’Sullivan. “My brother Mike and I now both have championships adding our three to the four earned by Tom Rosati. I am so proud to be a part of that.”

During the presentation, O’Sullivan received awards from the Speedway, NASCAR and Dave Lind Racing.

O’Sullivan bested a history-laden crop of competitors. Rick Gentes, who sits second on the all-time win list at Thompson, came home as the runner-up. The well-deserved “Most Improved Driver” Mike Scorzelli of Malta, NY, finished third in the season-long standings. John Falconi of Oakham, MA, continued a family legacy of racing success in New England that spans many decades with his fourth-place honors. Falconi was also presented with the Chief Starter’s Award for Sportsmanship. Accomplished competitor Phil Rondeau of Baltic, CT, returned for a full assault on the Late Models in 2011 to round out the top-five in the final point standings.

The Late Model division did not have a rookie contender in the field in 2011.

Keith “Cam” McDermott of Scituate, RI, had been “the bridesmaid” finishing second in the TIS Modified championship chase two consecutive years. At the start of the 2011 season, his sheer determination to make the ultimate leap was evident. Each week, amidst a tight point battle, McDermott seemed to get more focused. And, after 15 top-ten and 14 top-five finishes (in 15 starts) including four victories, the championship accolades belonged to McDermott.

McDermott shared the limelight with his car owners, parents Keith and Calista McDermott.

“We left Little ‘T’ six years ago, “said McDermott, a former quarter midget competitor, during his acceptance speech. “The first time we drove into the big track we had no clue what we were doing. It took us three years to figure it out. For the last three years we have been in contention. My parents stuck with me through it all. This championship would not have been possible without them.”

McDermott also acknowledged that the advice and assistance from Charlie, Chris, and Carl Pasteryak was instrumental in his success.

McDermott also received champion’s laurels from Thompson Speedway, NASCAR, and Dave Lind Racing.

Only four points was the difference between first and second place in the Thompson Modified Division’s final standings. Glenn Boss gave it a valiant effort with 15 top-ten and 13 top-five finishes and six wins. He claimed victory in the final point race only to come up four-points (two positions) short in the season-long chase for the championship. By virtue of his six wins in 2011 Boss’ career win total is now 52; placing him in the top-5 of all-time winners at Thompson.

Another former champ R.J. Marcotte of Millville, MA and two up-and-comers Jason Sundeen of Douglas, MA, and Ryan Morgan of Mystic, CT, rounded out the top-five in the final Thompson Modified point standings.

At Thompson, the Most Improved Driver Award is not decided simply by the advancement in points from year-to-year but by careful consideration by both track officials and fellow competitors. In the Thompson Modifieds Ryan Morgan was recognized as the division’s “Most Improved Driver”. Again, at Thompson, the Rookie-of-the-Year is not simply the rookie driver finishing the highest in points at year’s end. It is the driver that exhibits skill, respect, and sportsmanship. John Lowinski-Loh, Jr. was honored as such in the Thompson Modifieds for the 2011 season.

The previous evening, Friday, January 27, competitors in the Super Late Models, Limited Sportsman, and Mini Stocks were honored with a ceremony of their own.

Super Late Model champion Larry Gelinas of Buxton, ME, was honored for prevailing in what was one of the tightest point battles in recent history at the Speedway. On the final night of points competition, there were three teams in the hunt for the title-Gelinas, Mike O’Sullivan, and Derek Ramstrom. In the end, 12 points separated the top 3 with Gelinas’ margin of victory a mere 6 points over O’Sullivan. Gelinas and car owner NEAR Hall-of-Famer Rollie Lindblad earned the top-honor by virtue of his 13 top-ten and 12 top-five finishes including three wins.

“I have raced at 25 different race tracks and earned five championships at three different tracks,” said Gelinas. “Thompson will always be one of my favorites. The competitors in this division race hard but keep it clean.”

Gelinas received hardware from Thompson and NASCAR along with a championship jacket from Dave Lind Racing. Gelinas was also recognized with the Chief Starter’s Award.

The last two divisional champions, O’Sullivan of Springfield, MA, and Ramstrom of Worcester, MA, settled for second and third respectively in the season-long chase for the championship.

“The competition is wicked,” added Gelinas. “O’Sullivan and Ramstrom were always faster than me. I just got luckier.”

Ramstrom’s crew chief, his father Rick, was honored with the NASCAR Craftsmen Mechanic of the Year. Jim Banfield of S. Glastonbury, CT and Scott Rutherforth of Glastonbury, CT, rounded out the top-five in the point standings. Rutherforth was also recognized at the "Most Improved Driver”. Rookie-Of-The-Year honors went to Jeff Hartwell of E. Putnam, CT.

The Limited Sportsman Division, with its “no holds barred” style of racing, is a fan-favorite at Thompson International Speedway. Divisional champion Chris “Moose” Douton of Waterford, CT, love him or hate him, is masterful at this brand of racing.

Douton, in 15 races, earned 14 top-five finishes and three victories. The veteran competitor and his car owner Don Stebbins where honored with awards from Thompson Speedway, NASCAR, and Dave Lind Racing.

Former champ Scott Sundeen of Douglas, MA, chased Douton all season to finish second in the final point standings. Shawn Monahan of Waterford, CT, Jason Chicolas of Sutton, MA and Brandon Chamberland of Moosup, CT, completed the top-five in the standings. Chamberland was also recognized as the “Most Improved Driver”. Rookie-of-the-Year honors went to Michael Malbaurn of Sterling, CT.

Mini Stock Champion Danny Field of Deep River, CT, was a dominant force in the Mini Stocks in 2011 with a total of eleven wins in 15 races including seven in a row. All totaled Fields posted 14 top-five finishes.

“It doesn’t get any better than this,” said Field. “It was the perfect season.”

Leo Defevers, of Moosup, CT, Tyler Poulin of Pascoag, RI; Joe Baxter, also of Pascoag, and Eric Bourgeois of Moodus, CT, rounded out the top-five in the final point standings for the Mini Stocks. Specialty awards were presented to Joe Baxter as “Most Improved Driver” and Travis Jurcik as Rookie-Of-The-Year. Jurcik scored a win during his rookie season.

On both evenings, the top-fifteen in each division received recognition. Trophies were presented to all drivers in the top-ten in the final point standings. The Management of the Speedway presented Specialty Awards including “Dedicated to Thompson’ Award. This year’s recipients were George Sawyer, Norbert “Metz” Santerre, and Herb Sward. The coveted John Hoenig Memorial Award was presented to Tom Stroiney.

Master of Ceremonies Russ Dowd ended the festivities both evenings with a message of appreciation on behalf of the Hoenig Family and the entire staff of the Speedway and a warm welcome to all for the upcoming 2012 season that gets underway in less than nine weeks at the Icebreaker. Riverhead Crowns 2011 Champions In All Divisions At Senix Creek Inn Luncheon

Riverhead Raceway promoters Barbara and Jim Cromarty held their annual Champions Luncheon today at the Senix Creek in, sponsor of Eddie Brunnhoelzl III at Riverhead Raceway. Lots of nice looking trophy's were passed out to the assembled drivers. A really large overflow crowd attended the ceremony, hosted by the very capable Bob Finan, with help from co-chief stewards Mike Cappiello and Jim Maggio, and head tech inspector, Walter Boncek. In addition to the top 5 from each division, trophy's were given to Rookies of the Year inn the top 4 weekly divisions, and best appearing awards went to the nicest looking cars in all 7 weekly divisions.

Collecting Rookie of the Year awards were Bryan Sescila in the Figure-8's, John Baker in the Chargers, Rob McCormick in the Late Models, and Jason Agugliero in the Modifieds. Best appearing awards went to Justin Strumpf in the Legends, Paul Parisi in the Blunderbusts, Lou Maestri in the Super Pro Trucks, Chris McGuire in the Chargers, Arne Pedersen in the Figure-8's, Roger Oxee in the Late Models, and Chris Young in the Modifieds. Car owners in each of the top divisions were also given trophy's.

Top 5 Legends: Chris A. Young, Justin Strumpf, Kevin Nowak, Kyle Soper and Mike Malone.

Top 5 Super Pro Trucks: Dave Koenig, Frank Dumicich, Jr., Chris Turbush, Lou Maestri, and Erin Dumicich.

Top 5 Blunderbusts: Tommy Walkowiak, Tom Pickerell, Scott Maliszewski, Rob Bader, and Tom Sullivan.

Top 5 Chargers: Chris Turbush, Chris McGuire, Jeremy McDermott, Ray Minieri, and CJ Lehmann.

Top 5 Figure-8's: Arne Pedersen, Roger Maynor, Tom Ferrara, Mike Mujsce, Jr., and Dennis Scott.

Top 5 Late Models: Mike Bologna, Scott Kulesa, Jarrod Hayes, Peter 'Buzzy' Eriksen, and Kevin Metzger.

In Demo Derby, James 'Killa' Kilkenny won the points trophy.

After the awards were passed out, a buffet luncheon was served to all in attendance, a nicely prepared meal made by the crew at Senix Creek Inn. The 1st place drivers, and any of their crew members, car owner or sponsors then had group photos taken by Michael Pares, who traveled all the way from his home in New Jersey to take the photos for Area Auto Racing News. Festivities wrapped up around 3 PM, with everyone making their way home.

JUSTIN BONSIGNORE SALUTED AS 2011 RIVERHEAD RACEWAY NASCAR MODIFIED CHAMPION

Justin Bonsignore's off-season of accolades continued Sunday afternoon as he was officially crowned the 2011 Riverhead Raceway NASCAR Modified champion for the Whelen All-American Series at the Senix Creek Inn of Center Moriches. Ever the racer after making his acceptance speech and enjoying a bite to eat Bonsignore quickly headed to a waiting car to drive upstate to work on his ride for this weekend's indoor event in Atlantic City.

With co-chief stewards Mike Cappiello, Jim Maggio and head tech inspector Walter Bonczyk handing out all the handsome hardware the event was hosted by Bob Finan before an overflow crowd of drivers, crew members and family.

Aside from the 2011 NASCAR Modified championship trophies Justin Bonsignore and his car owner Ken Massa received, Justin also took home the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Long Island Driver's Cup becoming the 11th driver in its history to do so. Following Justin in the standings last season were John Fortin, John Beatty Jr., Wayne Anderson and Shawn Solomito. Jason Agugliaro was named 2011 Rookie of the Year while Chris Young took home Best Appearing Car.

After taking the Late Model title by virtue of a tie breaker on the final night of racing Mike Bologna and his car owner Tom Tohn were feted for their first career championship Sunday. Chasing Mike were Scott Kulesa, Jarrod Hayes, Peter Eriksen Jr. and Kevin Metzger. Rob "The Racer" McCormick was 2011 Rookie of the Year, while Roger Oxee won Best Appearing Car.

Arne Pedersen the 2011 Figure Eight champion was another driver to enjoy a career first championship as he and his car owner/wife Cindy took center stage. Following Arne were Roger Maynor, Tom Ferrara, Mike Mujsce and Dennis Scott. Bryan Sescila was named Rookie of the Year while Pedersen won Best Appearing Car.

2011 Charger champion Chris Turbush, who took his 4th consecutive title, did so again in 2011 and he is also the car owner for his championship mount. Chasing Chris were Chris McGuire, Jeremy McDermott, Ray Minieri and CJ Lehmann. John Baker was the 2011 Rookie of the Year, while Chris McGuire once again took Best Appearing Car honors.

For the fifth time in the last six years "The Wildchild" Tommy Walkowiak took home the Blunderbust title along with car owner/wife Gayle. Tom Pickerell, Scott Maliszewski, Rob Bader and Tom Sullivan all chased Walkowiak whose next win will be his 50th career in the class. "Pistol" Paul Parisi won Best Appearing Car.

Hard working "Dangerous" Dave Koenig earned his first Super Pro Truck title in 2011 along with truck owner/wife Karen. Chasing Dave were Frank Dumicich Jr., Chris Turbush, Lou Maestri and Erin Dumicich. Maestri was also named Best Appearing Truck.

Chris A. Young on the strength of five wins in 2011 won his first career Legend Race Car title and was saluted along with his owner Unlimited Inc. Following Young were Justin Strumpf, Kevin Nowak, Kyle Soper and Mike Malone. Justin Strumpf earned Best Appearing Car honors.

Second generation daredevil James Kilkenny was presented with his first ever Demolition Derby championship trophy as he kicked off the 2011 Parade of Champions.

Charles Pennington of F&S Race Fuels presented all stock car class champions with a Sunoco Race Fuel voucher for 2012 at Riverhead Raceway.

After all the awards were dolled out everyone enjoyed a great buffet at the luncheon, which was free of charge thanks to the efforts of Barbara & Jim Cromarty, Bob Finan and Judy & Charles of the Senix Creek Inn. A great time was had by all.

BETHEL, NY – Nestled away in rustic upstate New York, Bethel Motor Speedway roars to life from April through October, as everyday residents of the surrounding area and beyond turn into Saturday night heroes behind the wheel of racecars. A surprisingly large number of those residents in recent years are actually youngsters who trade video games and television to spend their Saturdays competing and, in many cases, turning the wrenches on their own cars.

As a result of the increased interest of younger competitors, several years ago Bethel Motor Speedway established the Young Racers Program, designed to give those who are the future of the sport support, guidance, and assistance as they begin competition and gain the experience necessary to develop their skills. This past week, the Bethel Motor Speedway office announced that the Young Racers Program had signed a title sponsor for the program for the 2012 racing season, providing additional support for the program and its participants.

“We are pleased to welcome Quality Bus Service on board,” stated Bethel’s Business Operations Manager, Tracy Chirico. “Quality Bus Service has long been a supporter of the activities and programs that we offer for the young drivers, including being a sponsor of last year’s LegendStock Bandolero race, so we are thrilled to be able to expand their involvement to span the entire season. With their help and involvement, we hope to be able to benefit and help more youngsters this year than ever before.”

In recent years, participants in the Young Racers Program have excelled not only on the quarter-mile asphalt oval at Bethel, but they have also gained recognition at other tracks and received numerous awards. Some have competed at the national level in events such as the INEX Bandolero Nationals and INEX Legends Asphalt Nationals, and several Bethel drivers have received state-level championships. Bethel’s 2011 Legends champion, 14-year-old Matt Pappa, took advantage of extra seat time offered through the Young Racers Program and went on to capture the New York State Young Lions division title and finish second in his class in the nation.

Bandolero and Legends drivers are not the only ones who have benefited from the program, either, as 4 Cylinder drivers often participate as well. During the 2011 racing season, several drivers received instructional time on the track as part of the Young Racers Program. The 4 Cylinder Novice champion, Kody Welsh, was among the drivers in the class who were able to turn some extra laps through the program.

The Young Racers Program also assists drivers with equipment, as well as off-track instruction. In 2011, many of the younger drivers took part in clinics that provided instruction in such topic areas as flags, how to react to various situations on the track, and how to promote themselves as drivers.

Bethel Motor Speedway is presently conducting a raffle to benefit the Young Racers Program as well. After winning the prestigious LegendStock Bandolero race back in August, Kaz Grala and his family donated the race-winning car, which will be raffled off on March 31^st. Tickets are available for $10 each, with a maximum of 500 tickets being sold.

A Wild Ride Around Riverhead, An Interview With Tommy Walkowiak

Tommy Walkowiak has been described from the best Blunderbust driver in Riverhead Raceway history to the biggest villain in Riverhead Raceway history; such is the life of the career leader in Blunderbust wins. It’s Walkowiak's ‘checker or wrecker’ personality that has earned him many friends and his fair share enemies in his 21 years of racing, and the nickname the “Wild Child” from famed Riverhead Raceway announcer Bob Finan. Walkowiak's racing style would be evident in his very first Enduro race, as he would lead his first laps of racing, but failed to finish the race because, as he put it, “I destroyed the car racing, it was total junk.” Sounds about right for someone known as the Wild Child.

Walkowiak has raced all over the Northeast, with wins in many different types of racing, spanning from Blunderbusts, demolition derbys, spectator drags, blind folded taxi cab races, and car rollover competitions, to a shopping cart race (and yes, he won!). Each of these races brought different challenges, but Walkowiak races all with the same mantra as his very first race, or as he put it, “off the track I will help anyone, with any knowledge or help in anyway. But once we hit the track, the gloves are off and I will do anything to win.” And that style of racing has brought him over 80 wins in all types of racing, with 48 of them achieved in the Blunderbust division to go along with 5 championships. To many of his competitor's surprise, the win that means the most to Walkowiak is a demolition win in 2009 at the Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, NY. “For some reason I really always wanted to win a demo and that was a big one, as it had over 100 cars” says Walkowiak.

Married for 13 years and a father of 2, Walkowiak grew up in Queens, NY and attended his first races at the old Freeport Speedway with his father, and he loved the demolition cars the most. While sitting one afternoon in his race shop, with the glow of over 100 trophies in the background, and the iconic royal blue Chevy Caprice Blunderbust, his pride and joy, on jack stands being readied for the 2012 season, Walkowiak reflected on a wildly successful and tumultuous career.

Finnegan McGhee: So what are some of your other interests off the race track?

Tommy Walkowiak: I really enjoy sky diving, hunting and flying planes. These are hobbies that are totally different from driving my race car and breaks up everyday life and gives me balance. Though I love racing, believe it or not, I don't really enjoy watching racing. Who knows, maybe it’s a control thing?

FM: Who has been your biggest competitor since entering the Blunderbust division?

TW: My good friend and un-official racing teammate, Scott Maliszewski. There have been others, but Scott has been there since the beginning battling it out with me. And though we share the same 'win at all cost' attitude, we do it in completely different race styles. He is so quiet and smooth you never know he is out there, and then when we come to the checkers, it’s like, "where did he come from"?

FM: How did you choose your car number and color scheme?

TW: Well, my original number was 33, as that was the number I used for my very first Enduro win and I always felt double digit numbers were good luck. When I went to register, my number 33 was already taken and since I was starting Blunderbust racing in 2000, I figured double zero would be good. Interestingly, I beat Scott to register the number, as that was also the number he was going to use. The color, well my first Sponsor was C & A Auto Parts and that was their colors, so I decorated my car in it and it has kind of just stuck.

FM: So then you believe in superstitions?

TW: Yes, many. But I consider my wife as my good luck charm. I won my very first race immediately after I started dating her and she has been there by my side every Saturday night cheering me on. She is the best.

FM: Any future goals you would like to achieve?

TW: 50 wins in the Blunderbust division.

FM: What is your favorite track to race outside of your home track?

TW: Wall Stadium in New Jersey. I have only raced there a few times, but I really loved it. The high banks create so much speed it’s a total rush.

FM: Though you are not old, you are a seasoned veteran of racing. How much longer can you see yourself driving?

TW: Wow, never really thought about that. I guess as long as there is a race track at Riverhead and I don't get bored, I will continue. I still love racing as I did when I first started, but I do have other interests, and well, I’ll just have to take it year by year.

FM: How will you want people to talk about you as a race driver?

TW: Another question I really have not given much thought to. Let’s phrase it this way. One time after an episode on the track a former chief steward was asking me what the heck I was doing. I told him “I drive the length of the Long Island Expressway to race 20 laps and I am going to get my money’s worth.” I want them to know that if they beat me, they had to be at their very best to do it, because I am not going to give you an inch. Some may say I drive too rough, but I know they feel prouder when they beat me, and that is what keeps me competitive. I don’t know if I really answered your question. I guess as one tough SOB from my arch rivals, and a true friend to those who got to know me.

With the roar of another racing season fast approaching, Walkowiak will once again make Riverhead Raceway his Saturday night stomping grounds. And along the way to the goal of a 50^th victory, there are sure to be as many checkers as crashes, as many friends as enemies, but always a wild ride.

The Original Daytona 500 Party back at TJ Halpin's

Long Island's original and most popular Daytona 500 Party, now in its third decade, remains the event to attend for the Great American Race, with hosts Bob Finan and Stephen Halpin announcing today that the bash would return to Steve's TJ Halpin's Restaurant in Setauket. The race, pushed back by NASCAR for 2012 to Sunday February 26th, promises to be one of the most exciting in recent years with numerous rules changes, and you won't want to miss a lap of the excitement with your fellow Long Island race fans at TJ Halpin's.

Located on the scenic Heatherwood Country Club, TJ Halpin's will again offer a free hot & cold buffet during the Daytona 500 and feature $3 Domestic pints and $4 Import and Micro Brew pints. As is his nature, Stephen Halpin, in conjunction with his partner Timmy "TJ" Moore, will offer some great giveaways during the race. The famed Daytona 500 pools organized by "TV" Tim Halpin and his brother Stephen will again be available, as will a 50/50 Raffle. In that 50/50 Raffle, aside from the cash prize that is awarded, Tommy Baldwin of TBR Racing is once again adding two hot passes for the Spring races at both Dover International Speedway and Pocono Raceway as prizes.

A separate Daytona 500 Pool will be offered, with the winner taking home a huge flat screen TV to watch the remainder of the 2012 Sprint Cup Series season.

Over the years,those who have attended the Long Island Daytona 500 party reads as a virtual who's who in racing. Started back in the early 90's by Bob Finan and the Halpin brothers at the former Gallagher's Pub in Rocky Point, the concept started as a way to get a few friends together to watch the race in a Super Bowl type atmosphere. The party, in its three decades, has entertained thousands of race fans.

A heated tent, complete with a big screen TV, will be erected on the deck of TJ Halpin's, while inside you won't miss a lap of the race with numerous TV's keeping the call of the race by Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip, and Larry McReynolds on FOX pumping all afternoon long.

For those who can't make the Daytona 500 Party on Sunday, Stephen Halpin has announced he will present "Thursday Thunder" at TJ Halpin's for the Duel at Daytona qualifying races Thursday, February 23rd. For that afternoon, TJ Halpin's will start the daily Happy Hour at 2:00 pm for the Duel at Daytona qualifying races, and there will be the usual Happy Hour drink and food specials available.

Admission is, as it always has been, FREE to the Daytona 500 party, with the doors to TJ Halpin' swinging open Febraury 26th at 11:00 a.m. to start making the Daytona 500 pools available. The Heatherwood Country Club, on Arrowhead Lane in Setauket, is just South off Route 347, with the restaurant right at the front of the golf course.

TED CHRISTOPHER TO RUN WAYNE ANDERSON'S EASTPORT FEEDS NASCAR MODIFIED AT RIVERHEAD RACEWAY IN 2012

The off season silence of the racing world on Long Island was shattered in early January when it was announced that Ted Christopher of Plainville, Ct. would drive Wayne Anderson's Eastport Feeds NASCAR Modified on a weekly basis at Riverhead Raceway starting with the Twin 30 feature events on opening night May 5th. Anderson confirmed the pairing Tuesday after returning from vacation.

The weekly NASCAR Modified field at Riverhead Raceway is known to be among the toughest and most star studded in the Whelen All-American Series, and with the announcement of the Christopher/Anderson pairing it gets even stronger. "Teddy and my crew chief Kenny Lechner had been talking on and off" Wayne reflected when confirming his new team for 2012, "recently Teddy started calling Kenny more often and so we put a deal together". Before going public with the news Anderson first consulted with his longtime and loyal sponsor Doug Corwin of Eastport Feeds, who was quick to approve of the new tandem.

One thing is for certain with both Christopher and Anderson, they both know how to win track titles, as they have 20 between them. Wayne is a former five-time Riverhead Raceway titleist who also garnered two championships, each in the NASCAR Modified ranks, at Islip Speedway and the New Egypt Speedway. Teddy, who has been dubbed "TC" during his successful career has won the Stafford Motor Speedway championship 7-times and has 3 Thompson Speedway and one Waterford Speedbowl titles to his credit. If the 20 track titles between the duo weren't enough, both Wayne and Teddy have also won the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title as well.

"The way the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule sits, and if Teddy had a solid full-time ride in that series, he'd have to miss two Riverhead shows" Wayne noted. The WMT has Saturday night stops at both the Monadnock Speedway and Waterford Speedbowl early in the season. Christopher, in a recent Lenny Sammons article in the Area Auto Racing News, stated he'll fly to Long Island on a friend's plane for remainder of the season.

Just because Teddy Christopher is wheeling the Performance Technology powered Chevy for Anderson doesn't mean Wayne will be sitting still all season long cheering on his driver. Anderson has a back-up car that was started once during in 2011 by Mike Ewanitsko that Wayne will race on a part-time basis for the upcoming campaign.

Ted Christopher, aside from having a reputation that precedes him, is not just known for his victories and championships in both SK and NASCAR Modified racing, but he perhaps is also one of the most versatile drivers in the sport. Over the last several years, Teddy has won an indoor TQ Midget event in Atlantic City, a DIRT Modified race on a road course in Millville, NJ, and a Super Modified Race for noted car owner Clyde Boothe. His driving style, which mirrors Anderson's in his heyday, will certainly spice things up on the tight confines of Riverhead Raceway in 2012.
